Welcome to our Creative Journey
The Common Room Detroit began in 2021 as a simple idea shared by a group of artists from different disciplines: What if we had a place where we could create freely—and help others do the same? What started as a need for our own workspace quickly grew into something much bigger.
We opened our first studio in the Russell Industrial Center, a space where we worked, collaborated, and hosted events whenever we could. But in the middle of a pandemic and within a shared building, it was difficult to reach our community in the way we dreamed. Even after leaving that space, our commitment to Detroit’s creative community never stopped. We kept studying, practicing, and growing in our individual crafts while continuing to show up for other artists across the city.
Today, The Common Room Detroit is evolving into the creative hub we always envisioned. We’re building new partnerships with local artists and businesses, planning workshops and events, and strengthening the connections that bring Detroit’s creative community together.
Our ultimate goal is to secure a permanent home—a space where artists of all levels, mediums, and backgrounds can create, learn, connect, host, explore, and simply be. A welcoming, accessible environment filled with tools, mentorship, community support, and opportunities for every kind of artist.
Detroit has long been known for its industry and innovation, and now for its growing tech presence—but its heartbeat has always been creative. From musicians and painters to designers, photographers, and thinkers of all kinds, this city is powered by imagination. We’re here to honor that legacy, uplift the artists who shape it, and build a future where creativity has the space to thrive.
The Common Room Detroit is more than a collective. It’s a reminder that art belongs to everyone—and that together, we can create something extraordinary.
